Ruth Kemna is a violist, performer and director. In her interdisciplinary work, she combines contemporary music with performance, theatre, video and installation. Her artistic practice centres on questions concerning the relationships between humans, nature and society, as well as the search for new forms of musical storytelling.
She studied Viola Solo and Applied Theatre at the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Her teachers included Volker Jacobsen and Veronika Hagen-Di Ronza. She attended masterclasses with musicians such as Jean Sulem, Tatjana Masurenko, Thomas Riebl, Hartmut Rohde, Barbara Westphal and Garth Knox.For her viola theatre piece ‘Biography: reset or in search of Kylvirien’, she was awarded the Prize for Excellence by the Mozarteum University in Salzburg in recognition of an outstanding Master’s thesis.
As a musician, Ruth Kemna has worked with renowned ensembles and orchestras such as the Klangforum Wien and the Ensemble Modern. She was principal violist with the Hamburger Camerata, held a fixed-term contract with the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and was a long-standing member of the Orchester im Treppenhaus. As a performer, she has appeared at international festivals such as the Ruhrtriennale, the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, the Davos Festival, the Heidelberg Spring and the Fusion Festival.
Concert tours and artistic projects have taken her throughout Europe, as well as to Venezuela, Ecuador, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Tunisia and Turkey.
Alongside her musical career, Ruth Kemna develops her own performances and installations, in which sound, the body, language, video and spatial situations are interwoven. Her works lie at the intersection of art and social criticism, exploring themes such as ecology, social inequalities, memory and possible visions of the future.
She is a member of the international artists’ collective Group 50:50, which operates across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Switzerland and Germany and develops activist music theatre projects in postcolonial contexts.
Another focus of her work lies in transnational projects in the Mediterranean region, in which she seeks artistic connections between African and European perspectives. In her work, she combines research, musical composition and performative practice to create open spaces for experience.
In April 2025, Ruth Kemna was an artist-in-residence at the Watermill Centre in New York.
In 2026, her music and dance theatre piece 'Im Palmenhaus' premiered at LOFFT – Das Theater in Leipzig. As a fellow of the Kunststiftung NRW, she spent the summer of 2026 on a three-month artist residency in Istanbul at Atelier Galata.

Ruth Kemna ist Bratschistin, Performerin und Regisseurin. In ihren interdisziplinären Arbeiten verbindet sie zeitgenössische Musik mit Performance, Theater, Video und Installation. Im Zentrum ihrer künstlerischen Praxis stehen Fragen nach den Beziehungen zwischen Mensch, Natur und Gesellschaft sowie die Suche nach neuen Formen des musikalischen Erzählens.
Sie studierte im Viola im Konzertfach und Applied Theatre an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, der Guildhall School of Music and Drama London und der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. Ihre Lehrer waren unter anderem Volker Jacobsen und Veronika Hagen-Di Ronza. Meisterkurse absolvierte sie bei Musiker:innen wie Jean Sulem, Tatjana Masurenko, Thomas Riebl, Hartmut Rohde, Barbara Westphal und Garth Knox.
Für ihr Bratschentheaterstück „Biographie: reset oder auf der Suche nach Kylvirien“ wurde sie von der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg mit dem Preis der Exzellenz für eine außergewöhnliche Masterarbeit ausgezeichnet.
Als Musikerin arbeitete Ruth Kemna mit renommierten Ensembles und Orchestern wie dem Klangforum Wien und dem Ensemble Modern. Sie war Solobratschistin der Hamburger Camerata, hatte einen Zeitvertrag bei der NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover und langjähriges Mitglied des Orchester im Treppenhaus. Als Interpretin trat sie bei internationalen Festivals wie der Ruhrtriennale, dem Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, dem Davos Festival, dem Heidelberger Frühling und der Fusion Festival auf. Konzertreisen und künstlerische Projekte führten sie durch Europa sowie nach Venezuela, Ecuador, China, in die Demokratische Republik Kongo, nach Südafrika, Tunesien und die Türkei.
Parallel zu ihrer musikalischen Laufbahn entwickelt Ruth Kemna eigene Performances und Installationen, in denen Klang, Körper, Sprache, Video und räumliche Situationen miteinander verbunden werden. Ihre Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Kunst und gesellschaftlicher Reflexion und beschäftigen sich mit Fragen von Ökologie, sozialen Ungleichheiten, Erinnerung und möglichen Zukunftsentwürfen.
Sie ist Mitglied des internationalen Künstlerkollektivs Group 50:50, das zwischen der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, der Schweiz und Deutschland arbeitet und aktivistische Musiktheaterprojekte in postkolonialen Kontexten entwickelt.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt in transnationalen Projekten im Mittelmeerraum, in denen sie nach künstlerischen Verbindungen zwischen afrikanischen und europäischen Perspektiven sucht. In ihrer Arbeit verbindet sie Recherche, musikalische Komposition und performative Praxis zu offenen Erfahrungsräumen.
Als Teil des landwirtschaftlichen Familienbetriebs entwickelt Ruth Kemna außerdem künstlerische Ansätze zur Auseinandersetzung mit menschlichen Beziehungen zu Natur, Agrarkultur und landwirtschaftlicher Arbeit.
Im April 2025 war Ruth Kemna Artist in Residence im Watermill Center in New York. 2026 wurde im LOFFT Das Theater in Leipzig ihr Musik- und Tanztheaterstück „Im Palmenhaus“ uraufgeführt. Als Stipendiatin der Kunststiftung NRW und verbringt sie im Sommer 2026 eine dreimonatige Artist Residency in Istanbul im Atelier Galata.

Ruth Kemna è violista, performer e regista. Nei suoi lavori interdisciplinari coniuga la musica contemporanea con la performance, il teatro, il video e l’installazione. Al centro della sua pratica artistica vi sono le riflessioni sui rapporti tra uomo, natura e società, nonché la ricerca di nuove forme di narrazione musicale.
Ha studiato viola come strumento solista e teatro presso l’Università di Musica, Teatro e Media di Hannover, la Guildhall School of Music and Drama di Londra e l’Università Mozarteum di Salisburgo. Tra i suoi insegnanti figurano Volker Jacobsen e Veronika Hagen-Di Ronza. Ha frequentato corsi di perfezionamento con musicisti quali Jean Sulem, Tatjana Masurenko, Thomas Riebl, Hartmut Rohde, Barbara Westphal e Garth Knox.
Per il suo spettacolo teatrale con viola "Biografia: reset o alla ricerca di Kylvirien" è stata insignita dall’Università Mozarteum di Salisburgo del Premio di Eccellenza per una tesi di master eccezionale.

Parallelamente alla sua carriera musicale, Ruth Kemna sviluppa performance e installazioni originali in cui suono, corpo, linguaggio, video e situazioni spaziali si intrecciano tra loro. Le sue opere si collocano a metà strada tra l’arte e la riflessione sociale e affrontano tematiche quali l’ecologia, le disuguaglianze sociali, la memoria e possibili scenari futuri.
È membro del collettivo artistico internazionale Group 50:50, che opera tra la Repubblica Democratica del Congo, la Svizzera e la Germania e sviluppa progetti di teatro musicale attivista in contesti postcoloniali.
Un altro punto focale del suo lavoro è costituito da progetti transnazionali nell’area del Mediterraneo, in cui cerca collegamenti artistici tra prospettive africane ed europee. Nel suo lavoro unisce ricerca, composizione musicale e pratica performativa per creare spazi esperienziali aperti.
Come parte dell’azienda agricola di famiglia, Ruth Kemna sviluppa inoltre approcci artistici per affrontare il tema delle relazioni umane con la natura, la cultura agricola e il lavoro agricolo.
Nell’aprile 2025 Ruth Kemna è stata artista in residenza presso il Watermill Center di New York. Nel 2026, presso il LOFFT Das Theater di Lipsia, è andato in scena in prima assoluta il suo spettacolo di teatro musicale e danza “Im Palmenhaus”. In qualità di borsista della Kunststiftung NRW, nell’estate del 2026 trascorrerà tre mesi in residenza artistica a Istanbul, presso l’Atelier Galata.
